Custodial history

Scope and content

Collection consists of manuscript (handwritten) leaves from Western Europe from the 13th-17th centuries. Most leaves in the collection are from Christian religious manuscripts including books of hours, breviaries, bibles, prayer books, antiphonals, and psalters. Many of these religious leaves are illuminated, meaning that they are decorated with initials, borders, or miniature illustrations, often with brightly-coloured pigments and gold leaf.

The collection also contains legal records (relating to property, marriage, inheritance, etc.), a leaf from a work of canon law, and fragments of manuscript leaves recovered from later book bindings. The leaves originated in France, England, Flanders, Holland, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Most are in Latin, although a few items are in medieval vernacular languages.
